Five Minute Friday – Truth Be Told

Ephesians 3:20

LORD, the truth be told,
I’ve been struggling
with fear and doubt

Try as I might
I can’t control the future
or guess what will happen tomorrow

In my fear
I’ve gotten my eyes off of You LORD
Forgotten
that You are able
that You have a good and perfect plan
which You are working out in my life

I’ve lost sight of the fact
that You walk with me always
both in the peaks and valleys of my life
You use all circumstances
To help me grow and change
You expose my sin
So that I will confess and repent
You buff out that which is displeasing to You
and reveal conduct unbecoming a Christian

Help me walk by faith
May I not doubt Your goodness
or Your ability to accomplish what concerns me today

May I remember that with each step I take
You are with me
You alone know what my future holds
You are perfectly able to direct my path

Help me to keep my eyes on You Lord
Not my circumstances
Not the people that surround me

Help me to trust You
Tenaciously
Unswervingly
to the end

His Treasure Gems of Love from Your King by Sheri Rose Shepherd – Some Mixed Emotions

When the opportunity to read and review Sheri Rose Shepherd’s newest book, His Treasure Gems of Love from Your King, was presented I was excited at the prospect of reading her work.  I’ve heard some of her conference messages and found Sheri to be a very compelling speaker.

Based on her writing, I would say that Sheri has a love for the Lord and heart for women.  She desires that the women will grasp the love that God has for them and the blessings that come to a woman who loves the Lord, increasingly trusts and obeys Him.

I found many of the Treasures to be very encouraging, convicting and healing as they touched tender spots where I have emotional wounds that need the Lord’s healing.

Sheri’s love and passion for the Lord comes through in her writing.

I also want to share how I struggled with this book.  My struggle is with the style or genre of this book as if God is speaking to the reader.  I would have felt more comfortable if instead the writer was praying to God.  It’s easy to not accurately represent God, because we see Him through our own unique perspective that is colored by our life and experiences.  I also felt like the sovereignty and holiness of God was somewhat lacking.  The focus seemed to be on the person to whom God was talking and less focused on God.  As portrayed, God seemed to be gently trying to persuade the beloved child or daughter and was seldom revealed as God, the absolute Authority to Whom we will give an account.  I would have also appreciated if scripture references had been given that would line up to the words God was speaking.

I would like to thank Tyndale House Publishers for providing a complimentary copy of this book.

Five Minute Friday – Reflections on Grace

Five Minute Friday – Write & Remember

When the winds of change blow…
It seems as if there is no area of my life that’s untouched.

It’s then I feel compelled to meditate, remember and write about Who You are O Lord.

You are my Heavenly Father enthroned above
You know the end from the beginning

You had and outrageous plan set in place
Before the foundations of the world were laid.

You alone are Faithful
You are the Covenant Maker and Promise Keeper

You are the Priceless, Matchless Son of God
The One who is Mighty to Save

You are Holy, Holy, Holy
The Sinless Son of God

You are the Obedient Son of God
Who bore my sins so that I could be saved

You are the Way, the Truth and the Life
No one comes unto the Father, except by You

You are a God of Love
You are a God of Wrath

You alone are Righteous
Your motives are always pure and undefiled

You are a God who
Saves
Redeems
Restores
Forgives

You are a God of
Hope
Joy
Peace
Patience
Love
Grace
Mercy
Justice

You are my God, my Ever Present Help in times of trouble.  You alone are unchanging.

Beware…

“Beware of the Bareness of Busyness”

When I heard that quote, my ears perked up…that’s it!  That describes my life the last few months.  It’s getting busier and busier and I feel emptier and emptier.

I’m busy at work, I’m busy at home…and there is very little downtime.  The pace is too much!  There’s no let up.

I spend time in Word of God in the morning and at night.  I pray.  When I go to lunch or on my drive home, I listen to Bible studies or worship music…but there’s something still missing.

My life feels lifeless.

I think it’s because during my day, I’m not taking the time to listen to that still small voice.  I’m not hearing God’s gentle whisper or even His shouting to get my attention.  My attention is elsewhere.

I don’t take the time to write it down and think about it.  To see where it applies to my life.  I’m not taking time to enjoy the gifts that God has given me.  Nor taking the time to say thank You.

When people aren’t listening to me…I stop talking to them.  I don’t want to waste my time.

Does God ever feel like that?

Perhaps God’s silence, His deafening silence, is finally getting my attention.  Oh Lord…help me to hear You, to really listen and obey.

Sherlock Holmes and the Needle’s Eye – Disappointing

Sherlock Holmes_225_350_Book.868.cover

When I saw the book “Sherlock Holmes and the Needle’s Eye” by Len Bailey offered by BookSneeze I thought it would be a good read.  I love the Bible, and like mysteries and Sherlock Holmes novels.

The book brings back the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson investigating 10 Bible mysteries as they travel, via a time machine called the Needle’s Eye, to Biblical times as they watch events unfold firsthand.  The mysteries include:

Why did Ahithophel hang himself?
In John 8, what did Christ write on the ground?
Why did Jesus delay in coming to Lazarus?
Why were Christ’s birth and death considered to be at the right time?
Why were the Israelites instructed to march about Jericho one time for the first six days, but seven times on the last day?

Since I had recently studied David’s life, I was interested to read the first mystery, why did Ahitophel hang himself.  The author did a good job in bringing out the background and details of this story and presenting a case why Ahitophel hanged himself.

However, my interest in the booked quickly waned as I continued to read.  I found the book to be quite tedious and boring; the chapters seemed to go on and on.  One problem was that the mysteries being investigated weren’t clearly stated at the beginning of the chapter.  The book jumped around a lot and it was hard to track.  Some of Sherlock Holmes’ conclusions and answers to the mysteries were not clearly presented.

While the book is not entirely without merit, I would not recommend it.  If I hadn’t agreed to read and review this book, I wouldn’t have finished it.

I thank BookSneeze for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Friday’s Five Picks…A Heart Surrendered

One of my favorite blogs to read is Michelle’s blog at “A Heart Surrendered”.

I happen to know Michelle through church and that’s probably what originally brought me to her blog.  But that’s not what kept me coming back.  Michelle is a woman who loves the Lord and continues to grow in Christ.  Her love for the Lord impacts every aspect of her life.  She is honest, open and shares from her heart.

When I read Michelle’s blog, I’m challenged, encouraged and convicted in my own faith walk and in my relationship with my husband, family and friends.

I would encourage you to visit “A Heart Surrendered” and bookmark it as a favorite.

Five Minute Friday – Still Small Voice

Still Small Voice

I cry out to the Lord for help
For the courage to carry on
To not give up
Depend upon the Holy Spirit within me

Filter all that I do and say
Through the grid of God’s
Grace
Mercy
Truth
Love

When I feel I can’t go on
Or take another step
Strengthen me
Give me courage

When I don’t know what to say
Help me to remember
It’s okay to say nothing
Ask my Heavenly Father for wisdom

Let my words reflect the Lord
May the words I speak into broken lives bring
Life
Healing
Grace
Hope
Truth

Light the path before me
Guide each step
Incline my ear so that I may hear
And listen closely to Your still small voice

The WORD 8/11/13

The Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”
Zephaniah 3:17

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
3 Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
4 Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s

The Friday Five Fellowship – Kindred Spirits

I enjoy participating in the Five Minute Friday writing challenge.  Once I’ve posted my own blog post, I like to read some of the other submissions.  Sometimes it’s a picture that draws me or a name that stands out.

There are times it feels like it’s a divine appointment.  One in which I will meet a kindred spirit who loves the Lord and who is open, transparent and Christ centered.

Today I had such an appointment when I clicked on the E. W. Wright’s blog “WORD breathed”.  Today’s posted was prompted by the word lonely.  I would encourage you to head on over to “WORD breathed  – encounters with the Word” where you will find a sister in Christ who digs deep even with the boundaries of five minutes.

Thank you Wanda for encouraging your readers to share what’s touched them at The Friday Five Fellowship.

Five Minute Friday – Lonely Painful Memories

Lonely

Lonely…now that’s a word I’m all too familiar with.  In fact I think I can say I was lonely for most of my life.  All work and no play can make one very lonely.  I knew how to work hard and strive to do my best, but developing friendships was not my strong suit.

·    Memories of phones that seldom ring.
·    Getting home late from work, left time for little else.
·    I chose to let loneliness and lack of trust in God to influence me to make unwise choices.
·    The weekends consisted of cleaning, shopping and church on Sunday.
·    The Lord, church, Bible study and God’s people became my safe haven where the Lord would show me a way out of loneliness.
·    I remember my Bible study leader impressing upon the small group leaders the importance of calling the women in their group each week.  She said that in some instances that may be the only call they receive.  How right she was…what a painful memory.

As hard as loneliness is, there is a more painful loneliness and that is feeling a distance from God.  It may come when I let the noise and demands of the world drown out the voice of God.  Or when I stop paying attention to the still small voice of the Lord, or when I willfully choose to sin.  It’s then that the silence surrounds me and I’m aware that the fellowship of the Lord has been broken.  I feel like my prayers are bouncing off the ceiling.  The Lord has a way of getting my attention through silence and draws me back to Himself.

He never leaves nor forsakes me, but there are times He is silent.

Lord…never let me forget the pain of loneliness.  Help me to reach out to others.  To be a friend, smile, listen and embrace them.  I may never know what’s going on in their lives and how lonely they really are, but You do Lord.  Help me to see them, hear them, love and care about them.  Help me to stay close to You and listen to Your still small voice.

Jim Allis – A Heart for God – The Friday Five

Bible Heart Sepia- Heb 4-12

It’s been over 2 ½ years since I first started corresponding with Jim Allis.

One of the best things about the internet is the friendships that you make with people, some who are far away, with whose hearts you are knit together and who share a love for the Lord.

In those ensuing years since we started corresponding, we have prayed for one another as we go through various trials and tribulations.  Over the last year, the genuineness of Jim and Joy’s faith has been proven true through trials they’ve faced.  Their love for the Lord did not fail them.  Instead they continued to be God’s faithful witnesses wherever God led them.

Jim Allis has been a pastor and evangelist for over 40 years in England.  He and his wife Joy love the Lord, His Word, the lost and fellow believers.  The Allis’ know the power of God’s Word to save us and keep us.  They know firsthand the power of God’s Word to convict, convince, rebuke, encourage and strengthen us.

Out of his passion for evangelism and a desire to equip believers Jim’s has been writing weekly articles called “Think Spot”.  He also records them and Joy closes with a prayer.

Just recently, with the help of Joy’s son Mark, Jim has started a website JimAllis.co.uk where he has made the materials he has worked on over the years available to readers.  If you prefer podcasts as opposed to reading, there are many resources available for the listener.  More materials are being posted every day.

I encourage you to head on over to Jim Allis’ website and bookmark it as a favorite and visit weekly.  Be sure to leave a word of encouragement to this man who is faithful and uncompromising when it comes to handling the Word of God.

A special thank you to Wanda at The Watered Soul for inviting me to participate in her weekly Five for Friday article.  (I’m a wee bit late being that it’s Sunday.) Wanda’s is another website you should check out.  She shares from her heart and highlights many Christian websites and resources.

Five Minute Friday – Broken Lives

DSC_5560-Pencil Detailed

It seems all around me
I see fragile lives
And broken people

Broken lives
Broken hearts and minds
Broken bodies, souls and spirits

Broken by sin
Selfishness, pride and arrogance
Sickness and disease

Left to our own devices
We are undone and without hope
Destined to a Christless eternity

But there is One
To Whom we can turn
The One who forgives, heals and restores

One God
One Father, One Son and One Spirit
One Way to salvation thru Jesus Christ the Lord

In Christ we are freed from sin
That so easily entangles us
God forgives us completely and we are restored

He gives us a new nature
We are dead to sin
Alive to Christ

He walks with us through every trial
Equips us for every battle, every day
One day He will lead us home victoriously

Five Minute Friday – The Beautiful Cross

cross collage

Whenever I see a cross
I found myself drawn to it

An instrument of cruel torture, punishment and death
Has become something quite beautiful to me

For it is on the cross my Savior died
The sinless Son of God

He bore my sin debt
Paid the price I could never pay

His precious blood was shed
So that I could be free

When I confessed with my mouth
Believed with my heart that Jesus Christ is Lord

I was forgiven and set free from the penalty of sin
Freed from the power of sin and one day the presence of sin

In Christ, the chains of sin that once bound me
Have been broken

I have been sealed
With the Holy Spirit of promise

Assured that one day
I will be with my Lord Jesus Christ in glory

A Prayer for America – Independence Day 2013

Flag in front of the Washington Monument

Lord may I remember and not take for granted the sacrifices of our founding fathers that helped established a nation built on core Biblical principles.  I thank You that they were willing to endure personal hardship and great loss.  I thank you for their gifted and disciplined minds which drafted our Declaration of Independence and Constitution.

I thank You that our government was set up in such a way that wrongs could be righted and slavery abolished, and all citizens given the right to vote.  That though we are not all that we should be, we aren’t what we used to be.

Thank You that our nation doesn’t seek and welcome only the elite, but those who are poor and downtrodden, hungry and in need of refuge.

Lord, I thank You for the men and women who have served, fought and defended this nation.  I thank You for the sacrifice of those who paid the ultimate price.  I pray that we will be a people who show gratitude and not take their sacrifice for granted.  That we will appreciate the rights and freedom we have been granted and be willing to fight for them with courage and conviction.

Lord on this day when we celebrate the birth of our nation 237 year ago, I am grieved over the sins of our nation in so many areas.  I pray that You would soundly and swiftly rebuke the judges who give approval to that which You have declared sin.

I pray for the salvation our leaders, in all areas of government, whose beliefs are in opposition to Your Word.  Those whose lives bear the fruit of unrighteousness and ungodliness.  I pray that You will expose lies and wrongdoing.  That You will soundly and swiftly punish those who have broken the law.  That You will bring about a godly sorrow that leads to repentance.

I pray that You will wake up Your church.  That men and women will read, study, listen and obey Your Word.  That they will leave churches whose pastors tickle their ears and make them feel good.  That You will move in the hearts and minds of pastors so that they will boldly preach and proclaim Your Word with confidence.  Knowing that Your Word is active and alive, powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword.  That it is able to convict, rebuke and bring people to repentance and faith in Christ Jesus.

I pray that You will open the eyes of the blind, unstop the ears of the deaf and turn hearts of stone into hearts of flesh.  That You will break the chains of those who are trapped in false religions, self-righteousness or atheism.  That You will save them from their sin for Your namesake and glory.  That they will be trophies of Your abundant grace and mercy.

Lord, I pray that You will burden the hearts and minds of Your people to pray and be faithful and true witnesses right where You have planted them…in their family, neighborhood and workplace.  I pray that Your church would be sanctified, holy, set apart and dedicated unto You.

Lord, turn this nation around.  May we be a godly nation, a shining light on a hill.  Lord, instead of asking for You to bless America, I pray that America would bless You, honor and glorify You.

Five Minute Friday – Strategic Connection

The rhythm of life
Continues to speed up and up and up
It’s such a frantic pace
I can scarcely keep up

Every day…from morning till night
I’m busy, busy, busy
Most of it
Is of no eternal consequence

All around me people seek connection
By Facebook, Twitter, email and cell
Talking to a friend face to face, iPhone in hand
They are disconnected and distracted

Is all this connection glorifying God
Is it putting the Christ and others first
Or have we been bamboozled by the enemy
Who strategically uses anything to keep us from what really matters
